Choosing The Right Exercise For You

The type of exercise you do all depends on you and what you like to do. What you hate doing, paying membership fees, and whether or not to buy equipment are all things you need to consider as well as answer.

If you choose something that you don’t like to do, you aren’t going to keep doing it for a long period of time. Give it some thought - if you don’t like jogging, you aren’t going to get up at 6 AM and go running. If you can’t find something you like to do, choose something you hate the least, which will normally be walking.

Walking is great exercise, as it suits all levels of fitness. Anyone can start a walking program at
any time, it’s normally the intensity and duration that differs. Walking is also a social exercise,
as it isn’t difficult to find a training partner to chat with while you exercise. Walking with a partner will also make time go by faster.

No matter what exercise you choose, you should start at a low level of intensity and build it up
over a period of weeks, which is essential to the longevity of your exercise program. If you start
off too hard, you could end up with an injury which will require time off to get over.

If you are really in bad shape, you should start off by walking for 10 minutes each day. Then,
increase it by 5 minutes every 2 weeks. To make things more interesting, you should try walking
a different course every few days. You can also roster a different friend to walk with you each
day of the week.

If walking isn’t your thing, then you may want to try a fitness center. They have loads of variety and normally have trainers on hand to answer any questions you may have. When you choose a fitness center, make sure that they give good service.

If they aren’t willing to treat you well before you join, then they certainly won’t after you join. You should also make sure that the equipment they use is well taken care of. It’s easy to
find out, as all you have to do is listen to the machines. If they squeak a lot or make noise,
then chances are they aren’t being taken care of.

If you still aren’t sure what you should do, then you should look into golf or tennis. Both are
good social activities in most areas, and you can even meet new friends. Tennis is great for fitness although it isn’t for someone who is just starting out. If you haven’t exercised in a long time, then golf may be the best activity for you.

100% agree with this article. A lot of people quit exercising because they think it has to be boring! Why get ona treadmill for 1 hour looking ar a wall, when you could go and have a swim, or play badminton with your friends for half an hour a few times per week?

Some exercise doesn’t work for certain people. And as you’ve said, if you’re not having fun with your exercise routine, better find one that you’ll enjoy.

  • dextro:

The biggest part for me is to stay consistent. I tend to be very spiritfull at the beginning and begin to get bored within a couple of weeks. It has happen for several time, this what make my exercising plan never work out well though.

  • John Mealer:

i like how you put that people need to start out slow. A lot of overweight people try to jump on a treadmill and go for 30 minutes to an hour. that should be your goal, not where you start as your body will go into shock and start storing even more fat. good post

  • PX90:

I really don’t like to walk, but having a high diabetes. Doc told me to do exercise or to walk. So, i decided to join a fitness center. :) this post is great!!

  • Bluey:

Walking is a great exercise. The only draw back is at in terms of time, it is very inefficient. You could do other exercises for less than half the time with much more benefit.

  • David Black:

Some really great advice here. I believe your point about picking an exercise you like is so very important. I have been training at a gym for 2 years now and i still enjoy every session. I know i am benifitng from it but i also know if i did not enjoy it i would not carry on. When does anyone really do anything they don’t want to do (apart from work, but we are all stuck with that one)

  • Elvis Presley Biography:

Well… because of work i do sometimes tend to get sedentary… so when i feel ready to start doing some exercise i do as you said and try to begin with a soft, low impact rutine, whether it may be walking for 20 minutes and progresively bringin it up to an hour .. always listening to my body, since i do hate injures! =)

  • Peter:

Hey great site lots of information, i think you will gain a good following on the fitness side

  • Rosie Peters:

Walking does it for me. I walk 6 days a week and do upper body resistance training 3 of those days as well. That gives me 1 day off per week.

Having a podgy endomorph shape to start off with, the walking leans me down and keeps my calves looking smaller than piano legs. Bargain. I reckon if walking is not your thing, people should learn to love it anyway - it is what we are built for and once we get into the habit, walking rewards our bodies big time. Also very low chance of injury compared to other pursuits.

    Hello!
i like your content.Specially “Walking is also a social exercise” this one.

Cranking up your favorite tunes and dancing to one or two of them is a great way to get in some exercise when you don’t have the time to visit the gym. It’s lots of fun and it get’s your heart pumping!

The best part is it doesn’t even feel like your exercising if you like to dance.

  • Health Outlook:

Believe it or not, I really like doing exercise videos. I have a library of different videos and it makes exercising fun for me. But I agree, you can’t go wrong with walking. I love taking hikes and being outside. Nothing can beat that!

  • FJ:

Exactly! I always say this, you HAVE to have a love for the burn. If you don’t you’ll eventually quit. And if you dont love the burn then the workout you are doing does NOT fit you, find something that does.

I find people lack alot of creativity when designing their workouts, what do you think?

  • Love Handles Blog:

It really helps to have friends that will motivate you. Sometimes i just don’t feel like working out but I go anyways because all my friends are going. We make it almost like a social event to hit the gym.

  • maxx:

I think most people still think of gym when they hear exercise, which isn’t really necessary when there’s so much else to get your heart pumping. You named a few like walking, golf, tennis. Cycling is another. Heck, just playing with your kids for 10 minutes ( if you can last that long!) is as good a workout as any. Great blog and best wishes

  • Cera:

I agree with beginning slow. Don’t burn yourself out on the first day.

  • Marshall:

This is great advice. It is so important to match exercise to your personal habits and abilities in order to make it a lifetime practice. It is encouraging to see people with little or no exercise background heal their bodies, especially back pain, by choosing exercise such as walking, pilates or other low impact exercise. It is empowering to feel strong and fit. Keep up the good work

  • Rebacca:

Nice post, very useful information. Thank you.

  • KY's Commonwealth Eye Surgery:

Swimming is also another great thing for your body.I think for a general healthy person all exercises for the whole body (off course divided in to months) will be a good thing. But for patients we need a medical chart to follow. Fpr example if a patient is suffering from stomach or gastric problems he/she needs to do exercises to cure that instead of doing an exercise for spinal cord. Other than that
the patient also needs to follow good diet.

your right 100% right on intensity levels. i tried to push myself too hard and injuried my back. once i’m healed up and ready to go again im going to be more careful

Walking is fun, but only occasionally. Running is boring if you’re going for long periods. I’d rather do a sport or other physical activity which is constantly engaging and requires some brain power. Good article, thanks!

Yes I started with low level intensity. After I did the exercises with weights for 1 month now my power has automatically increased to lift heavy weights.

  • Height Increase:

True that if you join something you don’t like to do then you will find it hard to do it on regular basis in the long run.

  • Thomas:

Choosing an exercise you enjoy is one of the most important steps to take when you want to develop a personalized exercise program that you plan to stick with for the long-term.

However, if you limit yourself to a single type of exercise, you may develop imbalances and repetitive stress injuries. It’s best to remember the maxim: “everything in moderation”.

A comprehensive fitness program leaves room for exercises and/or sports that you enjoy, but also addresses our needs re: flexibility, cardio, strength endurance and max strength, and general purpose skill training.

So, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do some of your least-favorite exercises, simply because they’re good for you!

great tips. we really should learn first the workout routines that fits us to become effective

  • Lose 30 Pounds Guide:

I think that to be successful in your fitness endeavors you need both enjoyment and variety. Yes, as you said, you should enjoy the fitness activities you partake in, but I think trying new things is also key. Variety is the spice of life!

  • Membership Mafia:

I totally agree that you have to enjoy whatever exercise you choose to do as that’s the only way you’ll stick with it. I like weight lifting and riding my (outdoor) bike; I hate jogging and endless aerobics.

    I choose fun :)

The benefits follow. However, I know a lot of people who love to run but hate lifting. That’s totally cool. Do what you like.

The problem with a lot of people is that they don’t like any exercise!

  • chin up bars for home:

finding an exercise routine you are happy with is key to success, if you don’t enjoy what you are doing you will eaily get demotivated and just give up.

The key to to keeping up with regular exercise is to do it with a friend. I recently took up horse riding and there is a real community down the yard which keeps me going back again and again. I would probably have stopped if it hadn’t been for the social aspect

  • butt exercise:

As with every exercise regimen, the idea is to start slow, and work your way up to more intense exercises over a period of weeks or months. I’ve seen too many friends get heart attacks because they have not had any form of exercise for ages while they were busy with their work and entertainment. And then suddenly, because of some chance insulting remark by some acquaintance, they decide to exercise intensively just to reduce some weight or build up their stamina.

  • eFitness Source:

Finding the right type of exercise activity is extremely important for you so you will look forward to it each time. Try out different activities like aerobics, kardio kickboxing, rock climbing, yoga, and a form of strength training. When you try various physical activities, you do need to include a form of strength training. If a gym membership sounds expensive and not for you, consider creating your own home gym. There is a lot of home exercise equipment to choose from and that will fit both your lifestyle and budget. Fitness is a lifestyle, so enjoy the journey.

Walking (brisk)is probably one of the best exercises if you have depression because it naturally raises the level of serotonin in the brain, thereby elevating mood within minutes.
