Cardio Exercise

Everyone has wondered at some point in time which cardio exercise is better. To put it in simple
terms, both low and high intensity exercises will help you to burn off body fat. The question here
is which is the most effective to burn off more body fat.
When scientists first discovered that during intensive exercises, your body burns glycogen, which
is a form of stored carbohydrates that are stored in your liver and muscles for energy. During low
intensity exercises, your body will burn a lot of fat.
If your wondering whether or not it works, the answer is no because there are so many obese people still around. Even though they are working out with low intensity routines, it still makes you wonder how it can be.
The scientists were right when they said the human body burns more body fat during low intensity exercises like walking or swimming. During a high intensity exercise such as running, the body will burn a lot more calories. Even if some of the calories burnt are from glycogen, there are
still many fat calories burned as well.
To put the icing on the cake, when your store of glycogen gets low, the carbohydrates from your
food you eat will later get converted into glycogen to fill up the store and won’t be converted to body fat when they are left unused for energy.
High intensity cardio exercise will juice up your metabolism even after you have completed your
workout. What this means, is that your body will continue to burn body fat hours after you have
left the gym. This effect is nearly non existent in low intensity cardio or aerobic workout.
Accumulatively, your body will burn up more and more calories during and after you have finished a high intensity cardio exercise that it will with low intensity.
You can inject high intensity exercises into your cardio workout by introducing some interval
training. You can walk for 5 minutes or so, then break into some jogging for another 5 minutes or
so. Then, walk briskly again until you have caught your breath and then sprint for a minute
before you walk again. From this point, simply alternate your running and walking for the next 15 minutes until you are finished.
One of the best things about cardio is the more you do it, the more energy you’ll have. Cardio
will help you to burn calories, although its more useful for keeping your energy levels high.
If you’ve never tried cardio before, you should give it a shot. If you like to exercise, you’ll
find cardio the best way to boost your energy and keep in top shape. If you are just starting out, you’ll want to go slow and keep your cardio exercise in track - as it is very easy to over
exert yourself.

Victoria Beckham had her hands full yesterday afternoon, taking her three sons to gymnastics class in Sherman Oaks, California.
Dressed in an all gray ensemble, Posh cutely held the hand of her youngest boy, Cruz, as the group made their way to their scheduled exercise routines.

I think cardio is great also, however, when I do it, I get so hungry! It’s horrible. I could eat all day. I guess because I am burning so many calories.
The one thing I have found that helps me to lose weight, though, is to eat some more protein. I find if I do this, I am not as hungry.

Fat loss is a lot to do with your diet too. Exercise by itself with a rubbish diet will not be optimal IMO. I tend to agree with the article however, high intensity training can be great for fat loss (lasting post workout, same with weight training). I also find that unfuelled morning cardio is effective too, however. More than one way to skin a cat I guess!

Excellent advise. I’ve been a personal trainer for 20 years now in the Hollywood, California area. Some of the best results we get comes from sprint training on a track or cycle and burst training on a heavy bag. We find the key is to vary the workouts often and keep them challenging. BTW there is a slight spot reducing effect to the abdomen, hips and thighs.
Great article.

Low impact cardio may indeed burn fat at the moment, but I never “feel” like I have had a workout, or burned any calories. For me, pushing the envelope on getting your heartrate up is the best thing to lose weight, have a good mental space, and have lots of energy. I just don’t see how low intensity workouts do much good.

I like mixing my low intensity workouts in with weight lifting, I will do a set then walk a lap, and repeat

this is a great post. there is a training technique that is called HIIT cardio. High Intensity Interval Training. Its been proven to burn more calories in less time and keep you burning more calories at rest hours after the workout.

Cardio can’t be stressed enough. Too many times people (guys especially) just go in the gym and lift weights and do nautilus. That’s not going to cut it if you want to really be healthy. Good Article Karen.

Cardio first thing in the morning combined with weight training is the best way to go about losing weight. It is no coincidence that you often see many overweight people slogging day in and day out at the gym just doing cardio but getting nowhere whereas most of the people doing both weights and cardio are lean and toned.
Weight training works synergistically with cardio to produce great results when it comes to fat loss. You can’t have one without the other in my opinion. Always try and make cardio as fun as possible. Listen to your favourite music while running etc and it can make a huge difference to your motivation. : )

I recommend using an exercise bike for a good cardio workout. One advantage is that they are low impact (easy on the knees and joints. Second, you can pass the time on a bike if you position it in front of a TV. I have been able to add reading to my bike riding which makes me feel productive in more ways than one.

Great article. You explained the difference between low impact and high intensity cardio well. I always feel better after high intensity exercise, but lower intensity is a lot easier!

Exercises that include some form of jumping fit in well with high-intensity cardio routines and provide the added benefit of increasing bone density for both men and women. Even a small jump such as from a low step or jumping rope seems to provide a significant long-term health benefit, and this is of significant value to persons over 50.
It is noteworthy that several college soccer coaches like Anson Dorrance at UNC rate incoming players by jumping ability. It seems to be a key indicator of fitness. Lookng at the other end of the spectrum, jumping exercises are most likely to be the last thing that obese exercisers would think to include in their high intensity workout routines. Just a suggestion….

I find the best time to do my cardio is in the morning on an empty stomach, although this can burn muscle if you do it too fast; it can be a great way to burn fat. Good tips thanks.

I have to say that you shouldn’t count out low intensity cardio. Walking can be a great substitue for running for example because it doesn’t put as much stress on the joints nor on the heart, and burns as many calories for the same distance (it just takes longer). It is also much more sustainable as running can be a chore for many people while walking is pretty easy. Also if you have joint problems or are very overweight for example, walking can be much better for you.

Cardio really kicks up my appetite. For those wanting to lose weight, keep that in mind as they will want to have healthy food available for the day of cardio.

Jogging and morning walk are very good exercises for patients suffering from both heart problems and diabetes.
Thanks John

A combination of low and high intensity workouts will definitely give you the best results. You can even add resistance training to it and increase the amount of calories burned in a workout session and seriously see results faster. Many people spend a lot of time with their ab workouts and neglect a cardiovascular exercise. If you’re the type that does a thousand crunches and wondering why you still cannot see your abs, just start to include a cardio workout and see how you see results then. Remember everybody has abs…….it’s just a matter of exposing them by burning off all those layers of flab first!

Alternating high intensity cardio with low intensity cardio is absolutely great. I do calisthenics at the park Mon, Wed and Fri. I play basketball on Mon, Tuesday and Thur. My energy level has increased tremendously and I love the fact that I’m actually starting to see better results because I’m mixing it up. I think the effects are amplified when you work them in conjunction with each other. The clothing you wear too plays a big part in endurance. It is proven that compression style fitnesswear can help reduce fatigue therby increasing your performance. It’s not like a super man fix, but I thinnk everyone would agree….every little bit helps.

Cardio exercise is my favorite because you do not need to buy instruments and you can do it on your own accord. The important thing is in any kind of exercise you have to be consistent and increase your intensity as day goes by.

Cardio is tough for folks with Asthma.

Yes walking will make you lose more fat and running will make you lose more calories.
November 19th, 2009 12:48 pm
cardio is really important but must also done with other forms of exercises. cardio can be too intense for some so it can only be done for a couple of minutes then shift to another form of exercise.

While I am more into bodybuilding when I am finished with a bulking phase and move to a cutting stage I definitely choose high intensity cardio to burn off the fat.

cardio is very important but should be taken as part of an all emcompassing weight loss strategy.

i’ve been doing Cardio workouts for about 3 years and it really helps in making me fit and healthy.;-,

Having worked as a personal trainer, i would say short, sharp intensive exercise rather than than a long drawn out programme is much more effective when it comes to weight loss..quality not quantity
May 25th, 2010 7:56 am
A combination of high intensity and low intensity cardio exercises is the best, if you want to reduce fat…especially belly fat

This is a very informative article. I find that consistency is absolutely key on long-term weight loss and overall health. Having consistent access to cardio equipment is very helpful. If you live in cold climates, it can very useful to have a cardio machine in your home so that you don’t think “I’ll go to the gym tomorrow”. I know I don’t like always venturing outside, even to the gym when it’s cold. Anyway, thanks for the informative article on cardio.

Everything in life is about moderation and that includes exercise. Cardio exercise is one part of the puzzle, without it your exercise regimen will not be complete. Many articles will say do this exercise or do that, but in reality, you should do whatever exerise is the most natural to you. You’re not going to stick to something that you don’t enjoy. Whether it’s cardio kickboxing, step aerobics, cardio yoga, running, swimming, volleyball, etc… find what you like and go from there!
