Alternative Medicine - Ayurvedic

Alternative medicines come in many forms and Ayurvedic is one of them. Many people have not heard of this healing medium as it only came to the fore in 1980 although the practice of Ayurvedic healing is said to be over 5000 years old.

Ayurvedic means life and knowledge. This ancient alternative healing system has been practiced in India for many years although there is now a tendency towards western style medicine in the main cities. But most of the population live in rural areas where it is estimated that 70% still use this form of healing.

The basics of Ayurvedic are broke down into three main categories and those are diet, herbs, and yoga. Certain authorities have warned that some of the herbs used could be poisonous, and there are a host of people saying that this form of alternative medicine is a rip off, and that if anyone should want to go down this route of alternative medicine is that they should double check what they are taking. Not being a scientist or a botanist I feel as though I do not have that sort of expertise to comment any further about the herbs used.

But again with all forms of alternative medicine there will always be people that will say that the unusual does not work although a lot of the websites I visited said that it was good for arthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. A good point to push forward here would be to mention the fact that one of the more popular food supplements on the market today is Micro Phytoplankton which is nothing but a single cell alga, and who would have said ten years ago that we would be taking this type of food supplement on a daily basis.

Like a lot of alternative medicine cures Ayurvedic medicine is diet based which seems to be the modern trend and when you read all the reports on how diet based cures are having success it’s no wonder that this type of alternative medicine is catching on.

Another thing I did notice about Ayurvedic medicine is that is based on a vegetarian diet which would be on the alkaline side rather than the acid contents of sugar based products and meat.

As for Rheumatoid arthritis that can leave people in such a bad way that they can become bed ridden and in so much pain I do believe from reading reports of them being cured through these diet related cures is a good thing. Perhaps modern medicine has a lot to learn although I do believe that some of the large drug companies have taken out patents on certain of the drugs that are used in Ayurvedic medicine, which to me tells me that there is something there otherwise they would not be taking such measures.

Yeah, I would always recommend people be cautious about taking “natural” or “herbal” supplements like these. They may have a safe aura about them, but mixing them with other supplements may cause problems.

Have you read Dr Deepak Chopra’s books? He’s a foremost expert in bringing the works of Aryuveda to the West. Thousands of years of knowledge are able to last till now for a reason. Anyway, it would be interesting to see more people (especially medical doctors) explore it and subject it to modern medicine’s scrutiny.

    Karen.
    Hi.
While reading your blog, i realized that i am one of the many thousands of fat people that only ever talk about health and never do anything about it.
But then i wondered about something else. you see - i am a website designer and recently i set up a website on stem cells and at the time wondered if what i was doing was ethical.
these stem cell products are synthetic and it seems to be a very good thing, but in truth i didn’t really worry as all i was doing was setting up the website.
now i do not need to tell you how the term “alternative medicine” can be twisted to suit almost any purpose, but i wish that i knew the answers to these daily confrontations that i encounter with ethics.
    especially online.
thanks for a thought provoking post.
and yes- i will start to exercise next week :+)

it is true that large drug companies have filed patent on some herbs which are vital for ayurvedic, I think this kinds of moves from these drug companies must be stopped in my opinion.

  • Provo Chiropractor:

Those people suffering from chronic arthritis have very little choice when it comes to treatment. I’m sure that a good amount of people would welcome a natural approach to treatment (such as Ayurvedic) when all other traditional approaches fail. Thanks for the post about this natural method of treatment.

  • Meditation Expert:

Thank you so much for covering this topic. I think in most cases whatever we need to heal natural ailments is right here on the planet in natural form.

The problem is some of the unnatural mutations from chemical productions and man made toxins, then requires the stronger chemical based medicines to treat.

It is a vicious cycle, but the more we can get back to natural living and natural healing, the better off we will be.

  • Epiati:

Ayurvedic exercise, such as Yoga, is just one of many exercises to remove energy blockages in our body in order to maintain healthy. That, I’ve no doubt. Because I’m a student of Yoga, Ci Gong, and Toaist meditation.

But, as for the Ayurvedic way of lifestyle for example, vegetarian food, I try not to totally commit into it for 2 reasons.

    (1) Modern farming around the world is depriving fruits and vegetables of vitamins and minerals. You can find more information in this matter via search engines.

    (2) We still need animal-based food to stay healthy no matter how many vegetarians deny this fact.
